Acrylic Resins - Water-Based
Acrylic resins are synthesized from a wide range of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid ester monomers, as well as monomers with various functional groups. Since the monomers have good miscibility, they can be easily polymerized and copolymerized with other monomers. Additionally, by using monomers with different functional groups during polymerization, a resin with varying degrees of cross-linking properties can be prepared. Thermoplastic acrylic resins have a high molecular weight, and bonding occurs through the material's absorption or evaporation of water.
The properties of acrylic resins are heavily influenced by their glass transition temperature (Tg), which must be considered in their application. For acrylic PSAs, this temperature is typically in the range of -20 to -50 °C. Acrylic resins with a high Tg have low tack, high hardness, and high strength, while acrylic resins with a low Tg have high tack, are very soft, and have low strength. Hardness, flexibility, strength, toughness, adhesion, and stability properties are controlled by the main structure of the polymer chain as well as the alcohol group of the acrylic and methacrylic monomers.
The production process for water-based acrylic pressure-sensitive resins is an emulsion polymerization process in an aqueous medium using an initiator. Acrylates and methacrylates are primarily used as monomers in the synthesis of water-based resins. The adhesive properties of acrylic PSAs are determined by the monomer composition, initiators, cross-linking agents, and tackifiers. Therefore, adjusting the final properties of the acrylic resin is possible by changing the type and amount of monomer.
The advantages of water-based acrylic resins include high flexibility, no discoloration over time, strong adhesion, ease of use, and being environmentally friendly.
