Acrylic Resins - Solvent-Based

Acrylic resins are synthesized from a wide range of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid ester monomers, as well as monomers with various functional groups. In this method, the polymerization reaction takes place in organic solvents, and the monomers, initiator, and resulting polymer are either dissolved or blended in the solvent.

Solvent-based adhesive products are designed for long-term and demanding applications. The components of these adhesives are combined with solvents, and when the solvents evaporate, what remains is a stronger and more durable structural adhesive that is more resistant to chemicals and a wider range of temperatures. The hardness, flexibility, strength, toughness, adhesion, and stability of the acrylic resin are controlled by the main structure of the polymer chain, as well as the alcohol group of the acrylic and methacrylic monomers.

The solvent plays a significant role in determining the properties of the resulting polymer, including its viscosity, solid content, and polymer molecular weight. Therefore, depending on the polymerization reaction conditions and the desired final properties, the type and amount of solvent used in the reaction vary. The main functions of the solvent in the polymerization reaction are to dissolve the reaction components such as monomers and the initiator, control the reaction temperature, adjust the final viscosity of the solution, and control the polymer's molecular weight during the reaction.

The solvent polymerization method involves the polymerization of monomers in an organic solvent. In this method, both the monomer and the polymer must be soluble in the solvent. In this case, a mixture of the monomer, initiator, and solvent is heated to the reaction temperature. The solvent polymerization of monomers to form polymers and copolymers soluble in organic solvents is one of the most important methods for producing resins used in the coatings, adhesives, and layered composites (laminates) industries.

Petroleum solvent-based acrylic resins generally have properties such as high stability, good adhesion to the substrate, and resistance to chemicals and corrosion. In addition to not reacting with other polymerization components, a suitable solvent for synthesizing these resins must have a boiling point compatible with the reaction conditions.
