Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVOH) Adhesive

Vinyl alcohol polymer is a type of liquid adhesive made from polyvinyl alcohol polymer. Polyvinyl alcohol is a non-toxic and thermoplastic polymer that is completely biodegradable and is obtained by polymerizing vinyl acetate monomer and then partially hydrolyzing it. In this hydrolysis, the ester group in polyvinyl acetate is replaced by a hydroxyl group. The presence of this hydroxyl group in the structure of polyvinyl alcohol creates its hydrophilic nature and high polarity, which makes polyvinyl alcohol adhesive resistant to hydrocarbons.

Polyvinyl alcohol forms a very good adhesive film and dissolves well in water. However, the degree of water solubility depends on the degree of polymerization and the amount of polyvinyl alcohol hydrolysis. Generally, the higher the degree of hydrolysis, the higher the melting temperature, lower solubility, higher molecular weight, and higher water resistance. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) adhesives, which are non-toxic and environmentally friendly, are an excellent choice for food or paper packaging as well as for cardboard production. PVOH adhesives, which are made for laminating or bonding various paper and cardboard products, wet quickly to adhere instantly. Polyvinyl alcohol is often used in the manufacturing of composite cans, tube winding, corrugated board, and corner protectors for boxes.

Polyvinyl alcohol-based adhesives show good adhesive properties depending on the bonding process and materials, and are resistant to many oils, fats, and solvents. Polyvinyl alcohol is also used as an additive or modifier in adhesives, emulsions, and dispersions based on polyvinyl acetate. The final properties of polyvinyl alcohol, such as water resistance, tensile strength, and tear resistance against solvents, depend on the method of polymerization of the original polyvinyl acetate and its hydrolysis, as well as the method of drying and granulation. By adding materials such as resins, oils, preservatives, etc., to polyvinyl alcohol, its properties can be improved and its adhesion and resistance can be increased. Polyvinyl alcohols are used in the production of wood glues, paper adhesives, fabrics, and more.
